Some of our clients used to think that forecasts were necessary only in the early days of their businesses to keep the bank happy, but now they understand that to be able to control those businesses properly they must know where they are going and what they are trying to achieve. After all, we plan for most things in life and do not leave things to chance. Businesses which drift along tend to be those which totter from one panic situation to the next - a continual firefighting exercise. The pressures of operating under such circumstance soon pile up and efficiency goes out of the window. In contrast, those businessmen who establish targets, budgets or what you want to call them, are those who are aware that, given a perfect world, running a business is going to be difficult enough without the constant outside pressures. They know where they are going and are prepared for whatever action is required by the circumstances affecting their businesses. "What if" situations are readily constituted on forecasting programs Forecasting makes one consider the probable, the possible and the optimum courses of action required to reach one's goal. Being flexible allows various courses of action to be reviewed so that most, if not all contingencies are allowed for. Then you have the difficult task of making it all happen.
