For many clients we provide a complete bookkeeping service for their businesses which can include sales invoice creation, sales, purchase and general ledger maintenance and the running of a weekly or monthly payroll. From these records regular periodic management accounts ( monthly or quarterly) are produced. The requirement of each client is assessed individually - most definitely this is not a one size fits all operation. Your time can then be used in running and developing your business rather than dealing with the paperwork. Your records are kept on a secure computer system, password controlled, with UPS installed and with regular daily and weekly back up routines in place. Payroll, especially, is getting trickier by the day. Not only do we have the National Minimum Wage Act but also introduced were the Working Families Tax Credit and the Disabled Persons Tax Credit schemes. It is the employer's responsibility to administer these two schemes along with the collection of Student Loan repayments. Your payroll should also be able to handle the Scottish Variable Rate as well - you may think that this would not affect you but it could if one of your employees happens to own property in Scotland. The Stakeholder Pension Scheme came into being in April 2001 and is operated by the employer through the payroll. Add all that to the existing pressure to meet the payroll deadlines each week or month and you can probably do with any help you can get.
The Finance Act 1994 introduced a legal requirement for taxpayers to maintain certain minimum records and those who file tax returns must have these records available for inspection by the Inspector of Taxes should he decide to carry out a detailed enquiry. Anyone who fails to comply with this legal requirement in any accounting period or year of assessment could face a penalty not exceeding £3,000 for each year in question. Remember, under the United Kingdom direct tax system the onus is on the taxpayer to convince the Revenue that he is "innocent." Without adequate records you face an almost impossible task. The days of back of envelope calculations and rough estimates are long gone. Key Benefits
